What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique used for stress reduction, relaxation, and aids with emotional and/or physical healing. This alternative therapy commonly referred as energy healing works by the transfer of "universal energy" from the practitioner's hands to the patient.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words. Rei means "Transcendental Spirit" or "Universal Power" and Ki means "Vital life force energy". So Reiki is Universal Life Energy.
Energy can stagnate in the body due to injury or emotional pain causing illness or energy blocks. Reiki targets the energy fields around the body in order to improve the flow of energy. Reiki was developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui. Later on, this technique spread to the U.S. through Hawaii in the 1940's, and then to Europe in the 1980's.
Reiki is based on spiritual healing but note is not based on religion or dogma. Reiki is based on simple ethical ideals that promote peace and harmony. These ideals were developed by Usui to add spiritual balance to Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit is a conscious act when choosing to improve oneself. Therefore, in order for Reiki to work the receiver must take responsibility for their healing by committing to improve oneself as well.

What Happens in a Reiki Session?
During a Reiki session the patient will sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a table fully clothed. There may be soft music playing in the background to aid in your relaxation.
The practitioner places their hands lightly on specific areas of the body. While the practitioner holds their hands lightly on or over the body, the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, the practitioner's hands may be warm and tingling. At this time, the patient will start feeling very relaxed.
Sometimes the patient may have an emotional response during treatment as a release may take place. If this happens just know your body is trying to work through some emotional issue and most likely is trying to make you aware so you can move forward with the healing process. The practitioner will guide you during the session to make you as comfortable as they can and may provide additional support if needed.
A Reiki session can last from thirty minutes to an hour. The number of sessions will vary depending of the person and their particular needs to reach their desired goal.
